Bhangagarh Police Station Struggles With Lack of Manpower

GUWAHATI: It was speculated that the so-called modernization of the entire police forces and the establishments of the police commissionerate in Guwahati will strengthen the vigilance against various anti-social elements. However, the city residents have been getting a polar experience. In a recent check made by The Sentinel at the Bhangagarh police station, the above statement has turned only a reality.

According to a source, excluding to the officer-in-charge (OC), presently, there are only two sub-inspectors, while another is under training (SI) against the four sanctioned posts while there is only two assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) against the sanctioned posts of four. Moreover, there are only 13 constables, against a total of 20 sanctioned posts. Accordingly, the Bhangagarh police station has only four head constables (HC) and one Naik (NK) against the sanctioned six and five respectively.

For the importance of its location, this police station receives the highest number of cases. This apart, with the biggest government medical institute in Assam and a city hospital nearby, many complaints are lodged on a regular basis in this police station.

Situating in such a central location of high-security concern, how the police station mitigate the impending challenges can easily be assumed. Is it what we call smart infrastructure for the smart police?
