Birinchi Kumar Barua Memorial Lecture Delivered At Vivekananda Kendra In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Professor Sanjukta Dasgupta delivered the Birinchi Kumar Barua Memorial Lecture 2019 Lecture on – English Literature in India: Past, Present at Future – at Vivekananda Kendra in Guwahati on Sunday.

Professor Dasgupta is former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Head of the Department of English, University of Calcutta. He is currently the convener of the English Language Board, General Council, Sahitya Akademi.

The lecture was organized by the Birinchi Kumar Barua Memorial Trust. In the same event, Justice (Retd) Dhiresh Narayan Choudhury released writer Mitra Phukan’s English translation of Professor Barua’s work titled Aghoni Bai and Other Stories. The meeting was presided over by Professor Nagen Saikia, president of the Birinchi Kumar Barua Memorial Trust.

Birinchi Kumar Barua was a folklorist, scholar, novelist, playwright, historian, linguist, educationist, administrator and an eminent 20th century littérateur of Assam, with both scholarly and creative pursuits. He was the pioneer in the study of folklore in North East India, and was one of the many founders of Gauhati University.
