Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday claimed that no government since the conclusion of the historic Assam Agitation has evicted suspected encroachers from indigenous land and forest resources except the current BJP-led administration.
According to BJP spokesperson Ranjib Sharma, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, around 1.5 lakh bighas of land have been freed from illegal occupation and restored to forest reserves, wetlands, and grazing areas. Recently, nearly 10,000 bighas in the Rengma Reserved Forest of Uriamghat, Golaghat district, were cleared and a plantation drive with 15,000 saplings was launched.
The party estimates that 2.9 million bighas in Assam are still under encroachment. Recovered land includes areas belonging to satras (Vaishnavite monasteries), public institutions, and national projects. Notably, 16,000 bighas under various satras—including 130 bighas at Batadraba Satra, the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev—have been reclaimed. The government is executing a Rs 186-crore development project there, featuring a Guru Asana, museum, and cultural installations.
