Guwahati: Son of former Assam Chief Minister Golap Borbora, and president of the state BJP Kisan Morcha, Pankaj Borbora strongly refuted allegations that the late Golap Borbora had facilitated settlements in the Uriamghat area of Sarupathar Assembly Constituency.
The controversy stems from reports quoting two individuals who alleged their families settled in Uriamghat in 1973 and 1974. Clarifying the timeline, Borbora pointed out that his father assumed office as Chief Minister only in 1978, and therefore could not have been responsible for such settlement decisions prior to that.
Citing historical details, Borbora emphasized that the land redistribution carried out during the Janata Party-led government under Golap Borbora was confined to the Doyang area-not Uriamghat. "The redistributed land belonged to the Giladhari Tea Estate and was granted to indigenous landless communities who had long struggled under the Socialist Party leadership," he stated. The resettled village, he noted, was officially recorded as "Socialist Satyagrahi Village" in revenue documents.
On the matter of displaced persons from Sungajan following Naga attacks, Borbora acknowledged that the Borbora government had provided relief through camps, rations, and other essential services. However, he firmly denied any cabinet decision that granted land rights to those refugees.
Responding to criticisms surrounding the present eviction drives, Borbora defended the government's actions. "Eviction of illegal infiltrators is necessary. This aligns with the demands of the historic Assam Movement and is vital for the protection of Assamese civilization," he asserted.
