BSF, Guwahati seized smuggled goods worth Rs 13 crore

GUWAHATI: Border Security Force (BSF) is completing 54 years in the service of the Nation on December 1, 2019. The force is celebrating its ‘54th Raising Day’ to commemorate this historic milestone.

BSF Guwahati Frontier, since its inception, has been assigned to guard the Indo-Bangladesh border. The threat assessment primarily hinges upon prevailing trans-border crimes, terrain, etc. Threats such as infiltration by illegal immigrants, fundamentalists, insurgents, smuggling of cattle, arms, drugs and contraband items, and dacoity and theft, have been perceived and inferred by the BSF.

Addressing the media on Saturday, BSF Guwahati Frontier, IG, IPS Piyush Mordia informed that during the period between December 1, 2018 and October 31, 2019, smuggled items worth Rs 13 crore have been seized by BSF Guwahati Frontier. A total of 17,344 cattle heads, 33376 Phensedyl, 20,242 Yaba tablets, 70,000 strips of Sukhi tablets, 1073.05 kg of Ganja and 2.19 kg of Opium have been seized. There have been 185 Indian national apprehension cases and 27 Bangladeshi nationals.

“Although the entire NRC procedure was a smooth one and there was no proof of infiltration during the time as we were extremely vigilant. The BSF has taken over the task of erecting physical barrier on the entire international border to make it impregnable for kind of illegal infiltration. A technological solution, the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS), multiplies human surveillance by sensors surveillance and ensure that any attempt at infiltration does not go undetected,” said Mordia.

BSF, an elite force of the country raised with the strength of 25,000 personnel is today, more than 2,60,000 strong Force, conferring it the status of largest Border Guarding Force in the world with 192 Battalions (including 3 Disaster Management Battalions). These units are aptly supported by robust Training Institutions, an elaborated Medical Set Up, an Artillery Regiment, Air and Water Wings, Camel contingent & Dog Squads, to come true to the current responsibility of safeguarding International Border with Pakistan and Bangladesh. The Border Security Force is a unique Force with both” Peace time” and “War time” roles and has proven its mettle in most difficult tasks assigned to it by the Government in times of Peace, War and Disturbed Peace (NWNP) at Borders and Hinterland.

“The BSF over the years has always displayed the highest standards of professionalism, valour and loyalty to the Nation while defending borders, countering internal unrest, assisting in natural disasters as well as any other duty assigned to it by the Govt. of India. It is a matter of pride that despite facing various challenges, the BSF has executed its assigned task in an exemplary manner and has earned its rightful place in matters of national security,” said Mordia.
