GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah has urged the Delhi Alumni Association of Assam (DAAA) to do various welfare activities in the future.

Attending a felicitation programme organized by the DAAA on Sunday, Baruah urged the association to visit the orphanages maintained by the Social Welfare Department across the State to follow those orphans where they go after attaining 18 years of age. He felt that these children can be brought under appropriate skill development training so that they can lead their future with a purpose and turn into social assets.

Baruah emphasized the long overdue need to carry out a study on the origin and migration of various communities residing in the state like the Mymensinghias and why they migrated to Assam.

He rued the fact that during the colonial period there were useful research works done by the British scholars on the origin of various communities.

In his speech, the Chief Secretary reminisced the days he spent in Delhi University and also offered valuable suggestions to carry on with various cosmopolitan activities by the DAAA in future. The DAAA met at Civil Service Officers Institute Club at Khanapara on Sunday and felicitated four of its prominent members and super achievers – JishnuBaruah, IAS, Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam; BhaskarjyotiMahanta, IPS, Director General of Police, Assam; Sanjay Kumar Medhi, Honorable Judge, Gauhati High Court and Manish Choudhury, Honorable Judge of the Gauhati High Court.

DGP BhaskarjyotiMahanta elaborated the police reforms and social welfare projects like "Aaswash" and others. He expressed deep concern that drug menace among the youths is a major cause of worry for the state. The Police chief opined that the DAAA can assist the police in holding awareness meetings and prevention campaign across the State.

Honorable Judge Sanjay Kumar Medhi reminisced the days of formation of the DAAA where he was actively involved. He appealed to the DAAA with its rich reservoir of talents to script a future roadmap for the youths of Assam. Honorable Judge Manish Choudhury laid stress on development of entrepreneurship skills among the Assamese youths. He said that special emphasis should be given to the rural population by incorporating lectures on Entrepreneurship as a part of DAAA's "100 Schools Initiative".

In the programme presided over by Chandan Mahanta, a reputed scholar and Professor of IIT, Guwahati, more than 50 alumni who passed out from Delhi University, Jawaharalal Nehru University and various other institutions in Delhi were present and actively involved in a useful reunion. President of DAAA ChandanMahanta, in his deliberations, urged all including the super achievers to contribute their part in socio-economic development of the State and highlighted how the DAAA can render their contributions even beyond its "100 Inspired Schools Initiative".

The DAAA is a non-profit organization set up by alumni of Assam who pursued their education in Delhi. Bureaucrats, educationists, sports personalities, entrepreneurs, bankers, progressive farmers, social workers, lawyers, film makers, theatre personalities, actors and journalists form part of this group. The DAAA has ambitious plans particularly for the youths of Assam.
