GUWAHATI: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged protests in labour offices across the state, demanding the declaration of the minimum wages for the workers in the tea gardens in the state.

CITU staged protests at several locations demanding the monthly remuneration be fixed at Rs 21,000 for labour and the minimum daily wages of tea garden workers be declared at Rs 661. They also demanded that wages be given in place of remuneration to the Anganwadi workers, the ASHA workers, and the cooks engaged under the mid-day meal scheme. They also demanded that the construction and automobile workers also be provided social security, along with the workers from other sectors.

The CITU carried out these protests in Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Jorhat, Sonari, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar, and several other locations and handed over memoranda to the Laboour commissioners in each of these districts.

Addressing the gathering in Guwahati, the office holders of CITU mentioned that in the past 8 years, the state government has not published any notification regarding the minimum wage of these workers, while adding that the state has over 1 crore workers without access to any social security. They also mentioned that about 23 lakh boys and girls in the state have been deprived of proper employment opportunities. They also demanded that people engaged in the private sector, such as drivers of trucks, buses, e-rickshaws, etc., be given proper social rights.

They also mentioned that if their demands are not met by November 25, the CITU members will stage a Raj Bhawan Jatra protest on November 26.
