GUWAHATI: The Chutiya Yuva Sanmilan, Assam (CYSA) staged a protest at Chachal today on their demand for ST status and autonomy to the Chutias. Artistes playing Parkinson (Nagara) and clanging (taal) instruments also accompanied the protestors.

The protestors alleged that the Centre and the State Government kept the issue of ST status to the six ethnic groups of the state at the level of discussion only.

CYSA general Kaustav Kishor Chutia said, "From 1851 to 1971, the census reports showed the Chutias as Scheduled Tribes. Though the Chutias, sons of the soil, fulfil all criteria of being ST, the government continues to stop short of declaring them ST only for political reasons. If the government does not accord ST status to the Chutias before the coming Lok Sabha elections, the ruling party will face the music.
