GUWAHATI: A tax consultant of Dibrugarh fell victim to a cyber fraud after investing in a fake real estate company. The victim accessed fraudulent links on the GoMillion Facebook page and was tricked by scammers into making payments of Rs 16 lakh via RTGS on August 27, 2024.
Upon receiving a complaint on July 15, 2025, through the Cyber Helpline Number 1930, CID Assam took swift action and immediately alerted the concerned bank nodal officers through phone and email. Investigation revealed that the defrauded amount had been transferred to two different bank accounts. With the coordinated and prompt efforts of CID Assam and banking intermediaries, the entire amount of Rs 16 lakh was successfully traced and put on hold.
Meanwhile, the CID advised the public not to trust financial instructions received via WhatsApp or other messaging apps, even if the sender uses a known name or photo.
“Always verify by calling the person directly before taking any action. Never transfer money based on messages alone. Do not fall prey to the unverified advertisements on social media. Report any suspected fraud immediately by calling the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in,” the state CID said.
