Congress Demands Anti-CAA Resolution in special Assembly session

GUWAHATI: The Opposition Congress will raise the demand to adopt a resolution against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) by the Assam Assembly during its special session scheduled to be held on January 13.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday the APCC president Ripun Bora said even though the special session of the Assembly has been convened to give its ratification to Constitution Amendment Bill to extend quota to SCs and STs in Lok Sabha and State assemblies by another 10 years, the Congress will raise the demand of adopting an anti-CAA resolution by the House.

“We have no objection to ratification to Constitution Amendment Bill on SC and ST. If the ruling party moves the anti-CAA resolution, we will support it. In case the government does not move any such resolution, we will move the resolution,” Bora asserted.

Bora said the Centre and State Government had committed to safeguard the historic Assam Accord. “So Delhi and Dispur now cannot violate the Accord. Since the CAA has violated the fundamental spirit of Assam Accord, the Assembly must move an anti-CAA resolution and demand the Centre to exempt the State from the purview of the contentious legislation,” he said.

Demanding a white paper from the BJP-led government in the State on measures to implement the Assam Accord, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who was present at the press conference, also alleged that the BJP was responsible for secret killings in the State.
