GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has constituted a high-level 12-member committee to study and supervise the delimitation process in the State.
The committee will be led by Congress Legislature Party(CLP) deputy leader Rakibul Hussain. The other members are Pranati Phukan (convenor), Bipul Gogoi (coordinator), MLA Bharat Chandra Narah, MP Abdul Khalaque, APCC working president Rana Gogoi, APCC working president and MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar, MLA Basanta Das, former MP RP Sharma, former MP DijenSarma and former MLA Durga Bhumij.
APCC president Bhupen Bora said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) had opposed delimitation in the State till there was an error-free National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the State. Taking into consideration their opinion, the Tarun Gogoi-government was also not in favour of the delimitation exercise.
"If the delimitation exercise is done as per modalities and procedure, we welcome it. But if we see that rules are violated, we will oppose it in courts and through democratic protests," said Bhupen Bora. "Hence we have constituted a committee to keep a tab on the delimitation exercise in the State," he added.
Meanwhile, the 138th foundation day of the Indian National Congress (INC) was observed at Rajiv Bhavan in the city with the hoisting of the party flag by APCC president Bhupen Bora.
