Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Assam Pradesh has strongly condemned Congress leader and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhupen Borah for allegedly spreading misinformation regarding the state’s financial management and economic growth. While talking to the media, BJP leaders dismissed Borah’s claims as “desperate lies” and an attempt to mislead the public.

Responding to Borah’s allegations that Assam’s growth rate has declined, BJP Assam Pradesh Spokesperson Subhash Dutta stated that the state’s economy has, in fact, witnessed significant growth under the BJP-led government. He highlighted that Assam’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has risen from Rs 1.50 lakh crore during the Congress regime to Rs 6.50 lakh crore at present, attributing this growth to the “stable and visionary financial policies” implemented under Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership.

Dutta further emphasized that Assam’s capital expenditure, which stood at Rs 4,500 crore during Congress rule, has now surged to Rs 25,000 crore, signalling substantial economic progress. He criticized the Congress party for allegedly distorting facts and spreading negativity, stating that their frustration stems from the state’s rapid development under the BJP government.

The BJP spokesperson also drew comparisons with Congress-ruled states, claiming that Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana are struggling with massive debts of Rs 6 lakh crore, Rs 1 lakh crore, and Rs 3.90 lakh crore, respectively. He accused the Congress leadership of hypocrisy for targeting the Assam government over borrowing while ignoring financial mismanagement in states governed by their party.

Dutta asserted that Assam’s fiscal deficit has been consistently reduced, and the state’s borrowings are being strategically invested in capital expenditure to drive economic growth. He stated that the people of Assam are witnessing progress under Chief Minister Sarma’s leadership and will not be misled by “malicious propaganda.”
