Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah strongly condemned the arrest of Congress spokesperson Ritam Singh for the third time.

“By arresting Ritam Singh for the third time over his comments on social media, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is suppressing the people’s freedom of speech. After the Gauhati High Court granted him bail twice, Ritam Singh was arrested once again today by the Jagiroad Police”, said Bhupen Borah. He termed this action to be a clear sign of Hitler-like governance.

Borah stated that the government, which cannot tolerate criticism, is a severe blow to democracy. Treating Ritam like a hardened criminal, shifting him from one police station to another and denying his parents the chance to meet him, is a gross violation of human rights.

Borah further said that Congress workers will never fear raising their voices against corruption, no matter how much the police are misused. They will remain ever vigilant in the pursuit of truth. Describing the police’s behaviour toward Ritam Singh’s parents as extremely unfortunate.

He concluded by urging the authorities to release Ritam Singh immediately.
