GUWAHATI: The Public Works Department (PWD) is facing severe criticism for allegedly violating Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA) guidelines at the Chandmari-Bamunimaidam and Rukminigaon flyover construction sites. Despite explicit directives from the PCBA, construction materials like sand, cement, and debris remain uncovered, and regular water sprinkling is absent, leading to hazardous levels of dust and particulate matter.
A PCBA official emphasized, “The guidelines are clear. Construction materials must be stored in covered spaces, and water sprinkling is non-negotiable. Unfortunately, violations continue despite repeated warnings.”
Residents and commuters are bearing the brunt of the ongoing construction, with dust settling on roads, vehicles, and homes, creating health hazards and reducing visibility.
Environmentalists and residents are now urging stricter enforcement of PCBA guidelines to mitigate the health risks and environmental damage caused by the ongoing construction activities. The PCBA is reportedly considering stricter penalties if immediate action is not taken to ensure compliance.
