Guwahati: As many as 6 Containment Zone areas in Guwahati city have been untagged by the Kamrup (Metro) district administration on Wednesday after no new cases were detected in the past few days.

The areas that have been unsealed today are:

Bathou Nagar in Geeta Nagar, Guwahati

Central Jail, Guwahati

Lichubagan, Hengerabari, Guwahati

Syamkunj Apartment, Lakhinagar, R G Baruah Road, Guwahati

Hajongbori, Chandrapur

At the same time, the order enforcing the closure of all the shops and business establishments in the area from Sarabbhatti Chariali (Police Point) to the Arjya Vidyapeeth College field (both sides of the road), issued as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of the Covid-19, has also been withdrawn.

"The owners of the shops and business establishments will, however, maintain strict compliance of Covid-19 protocols required for containment of the spread of the virus", said a notification issued by Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu.

Amid a rise in the number of Covid-19 positive cases, several areas in the city have been declared as containment zone to restrict the spread of the contagion. These orders have been made under the regulations "The Assam Covid-19 Regulations, 2020", "The Disaster Management Act-2005", "The Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897", and other relevant laws of the nation. Any violation of this rule will now attract punishment under relevant sections of the law. Meanwhile, out of the 109 areas that have been declared as containment zones by the district administration up until now, 80 are still active.

At the same time, the Health department has resolved to conduct 50,000 random tests across the city amid an uptick in the number of cases without a travel history. Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the administration is contemplating another lockdown-like scenario if too many samples are found to be positive.

Assam has meanwhile registered 4,605 Covid-19 positive cases, out of which 2,411 have recovered. Eight persons have so far died from virus-related complications.
