GUWAHATI: Asom Sanmilita Mahasangha’s (ASM) executive president Matiur Rahman has said that the Supreme Court of India has rejected the interlocutory petitions of the Mahasangha and two other organizations seeking early hearing of the four cases for taking 1951 as the cut-off year for the detection and deportation of foreigners in Assam. The apex court, however, has not rejected the cases, he said.

Talking to the media at Guwahati Press Club on Sunday, Rahman said: “The four main cases are still under the five-judge Constitutional bench of the apex court. Besides the ASM, the other two organizations that filed interlocutory petitions for early hearing of their cases for taking 1951 as the cut-off year for detection and deportation of foreigners in Assam are the Sadou Axom Ahom Xabha and Swahid Parials. Rejecting our plea for early hearing of the four cases, the apex court has said that ‘it is not possible to direct early hearing of the four cases at this stage. The applications are accordingly dismissed. However, the media has misquoted it and said that the apex court has dismissed the Assam organizations’ plea for taking 1951 as the cut-off year for detection of foreigners in the State. This is factually not correct.” Rahman said: “There has been no hearing on the cases regarding the cut-year. The four cases regarding the cut-off year are still pending under a five-judge bench of the apex court.”
