Cotton University launches BA Liberal Arts programme

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The Cotton University has announced the launch of its new BA in Liberal Arts programme. In addition to its traditional three-year Bachelor's degree programme, the new programme will begin in the next academic session with 50 intake capacity. This programme is designed in line with the latest draft National Education Policy (2019) which emphasizes Liberal Arts as the futuristic substitute for existing traditional BA programmes in most Higher Education Institutions in India.

Talking about the new BA programme, Professor Bhabesh Chandra Goswami, Vice Chancellor of Cotton University said, "This new three-year BA programme is first of its kind in Assam and Northeast India. I have a strong feeling that in the coming future, Liberal Arts as an academic programme will be in high demand. With the introduction of the new programme, Cotton University envisions itself as a pioneering National Educational Institute that offers Liberal Arts under a public education system, in accordance with the norms and regulations of the UGC."

The new B.A. in Liberal Arts programme will offer students an opportunity to study a broad range of subjects while developing specialized knowledge in their major discipline. With a Liberal Arts degree, students can branch out into different careers such as academics, managing foreign affairs and embassies, policy research and development, health care administration, social work, civil services, client servicing, marketing, banking and a lot more. For programme details, application dates and further information, one can visit the official website of Cotton University.

In the traditional BA degree, students either have a major subject, for e.g., BA with Economics major or BA with English honours, or student can also pursue BA degree without having any major subject.

However, in case of BA in Liberal Arts, the students will learn many subjects such as Economics, English, Political Science and many others in the 1st year (first and second semesters). It is only in the 2nd year (third semester) that a student will choose his/her major subject from among the subjects studied in the 1st year. The major subject will be studied for the next two years intensively along with elective courses and skill enhancement courses.

This is the first time, any university in Assam and Northeast will offer such a programme. Also in the entire country, under govt. funded higher education institutions, Cotton University is the first university to offer such a unique programme to students. It is in that sense, a proud event for us.
