GUWAHATI: Assam Public Works (APW) has demanded that the Assam Legislative Assembly election 2021 should be deferred till the correct voter list is prepared with the correct NRC (National Register of Citizens).

Talking to the mediapersons, APW president Abhijeet Sharma said that it has been one year since the publication of the NRC, however, till date the reverification process has not been initiated.

"Names of more than 80 lakh doubtful Indian citizens have been included in the NRC. Thus, it is not a document of Indian citizens but of illegal Indians," Sharma opined.

"The voter list includes scores of illegal immigrants. We demand 100 per cent reverification of the NRC and names of doubtful citizens should be removed. Following this, based on the correct NRC, a correct voter list should be prepared," he asserted.

The APW demanded that the reverification process should be completed within six months and the Assam Polls 2021 should be held based on the correct voter list.

"The Assam Election should be postponed in the same way the BTC (Bodoland Territorial Council) election has been deferred due to the COVID pandemic," Sharma added.
