Deplorable Condition of Srimanata Sankaradeva Kalakshetra

GUWAHATI: The Srimanata Sankaradeva Kalakshetra is a cultural centre that holds some of the most ancient and traditional artefacts of Assam. It has always been a major tourist attraction of the city. But of late, it is losing the attention of the public due to lack of maintenance. Located in Panjabari, the area still has a long way to go in terms of street renovation. A resident of Guwahati, Bhaskar Jyoti Gogoi said, “The road to Kalashetra is really bad and dusty. Upon reaching, I feel sad about the condition our ancient artifacts are kept in. It used to be a lovely place to spend time in; however, it has lost its charm now.”

Srimanata Sankaradeva Kalakshetra was built in the 1990’s with the aim to make it the hub of northeast India's cultural congregation. It was once a major tourist attraction in the city. But the crowd seems to have become lesser and lesser with time. The glass cases that held valuable and significant cultural artifacts have developed cracks and some are even broken. “Many artifacts have a greenish hue about them. I think things in the cultural centre have started to decay”, said a tourist.

The cultural hub is presently under renovation of its exteriors but many people feel that the relics inside the museum are the ones that require immediate attention. Another tourist said, “I was impressed to see the antiques but it was in a really bad shape. The visit would have been more pleasurable if it would have been preserved better.”
