Domestic Workers’ Demand for Minimum Wage Protection

Domestic Workers’ Demand for Minimum Wage Protection

Guwahati: Since a long time now, ill-treatment and exploitation of domestic workers has been a matter of concern. The same has been occurring in the city as well, as many of the domestic workers from different parts of city claimed themselves as being a victim of exploitation.

Addressing a press conference organized by Centre for Development initiatives (CDI) at Guwahati Press Club on Monday many of the domestic workers claimed that they don’t receive the minimum wages in many houses.

One of the domestic workers Rimpi Kalita said, “Even though we are working at Rs. 30 per hour, it is not enough for us. If we get Rs 50 per hour it will be of our use, hence many of our employers even deny giving Rs 30. Besides this, the most common case that many of us have to go through is that man, mostly the aged and middle-aged look at us in indecent way. In such a case, unfortunately, we don’t receive the necessary legal protection, as we belong to poor and backward class our voice never reached there where it should reach. This is because, even when we go to complain about this to their family members, in the end, people like us are always blamed. Hence our voices are muted.”

Nazrana Begum, project co-coordinator of CDI said that the domestic workers are exploited in a way that even after working for more than three hours instead of one hour they don’t receive the minimum wage. Begum said, “Currently there are over 18000 domestic workers in Assam and the number is still increasing. The workers should get their rights and they should be free of exploitation where the workers are becoming the victim of long working hours and low wages. In case of sexual harassment and domestic violence too they don’t receive the necessary consideration when they approach for legal protection. We want the minimum wage to be implemented soon. The workers must receive Rs 50 per hour, as they belong from the most vulnerable class.”
