STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI: The Department of Handloom and Textiles seized 30,767 pieces of gamosa from various districts of the state from April 2022 to March 22, 2023, suspecting them to be power loom products.
The department has intensified its drive against power loom gamosas under the Handloom (Reservation of Articles for Production) Act of 1985. The department has formed enforcement squads with the help of district administrations in all circles and subdivisions.
The department carried out 2619 inspections, leading to the seizure of 30,767 pieces of gamosa suspected to be power loom products, 335 pieces of chadors, 255 pieces of mekhela, 921 mekhela-chador sets, and 45 dokhna. The squads seized 8746 gamosas from the Barpeta district, 4815 from Dhubri, 4545 from Goalpara, 2172 from Bongaigaon, 1763 from Dibrugarh, 1732 from Nagaon, etc., during the one-year period.
According to sources in the department, they will continue the drive until the traders stop selling the banned power loom products in the state market.
The lack of laboratories in the state and in the region to test to ascertain the fabric of such gamosas prevents the department from initiating legal action against the erring traders.
