GUWAHATI: Around 8,500 road accidents took place across Assam between the period from January 2021 to November 2021. In these accidents, 3,000 lives were lost and about 56 per cent of the victims were in the 18-35 years age group. These road accidents were mainly attributed to four factors - drunk driving, overspeeding, not wearing helmets and not following traffic rules. Keeping this in mind, the drive against violations of the Motor Vehicle (MV) Act - which was intensified on New Year's eve- will continue throughout the year, said State Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary. While talking to The Sentinel, the minister said that due to the drive against drunk driving and not wearing helmets by the Transport Department and traffic police, the number of road accidents had come down in the last few days. "There were few accidents on the night of December 31 but compared to the figures of the previous years, the number was low this time," said Patowary.

"When people follow traffic rules, lives will be saved. So the drive against MV Act violations will continue throughout the year," he said.

During the festive season, drunk driving cases increase. "As per the directions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, there will be strict checking of drivers for drunken driving on the night of uruka during Magh Bihu across the State," said the minister and added, "Our aim is not collecting fine from violators. We aim is to create awareness among people. Hence, we appeal for cooperation from all sections of society so that traffic rules are followed."
