GUWAHATI: Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University (KKHSOU) started admission programmes as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu visited the KKHSOU and reviewed the ongoing admissions. Addressing the media, Pegu said that the KKHSOU contributes immensely to improving the gross enrollment ratio (GER) in higher education. He said NEP has targeted increasing the GER in higher education up to 50 per cent by 2035. Currently, the national average of GER in higher education is only 27 per cent and in Assam, the GER is below the national average, which is only 17 per cent. He hoped that KKHSOU would help increase the GER in higher education.
Currently, in KKHSOU, there are 1 lakh enrolled in 43 programmes. Last year, 45,000 students took admissions, and now the admissions are still going on; till now, 14000 have taken admissions, and the admission numbers will be increasing.
The Degree and diploma courses offered by KKHSOU are recognized by the UGC (University Grants Commission), which is equivalent to any other university like Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University.
The UGC recently recognized the 11 four-year undergraduate and 11 pre-graduate courses with which the education minister expressed satisfaction.
The university has developed a completely new academic curriculum with effect from July 2023, incorporating various features of the NEP. The university has already conducted extensive public programmes to raise awareness among students about 11 four-year undergraduate, 11 postgraduate, 10 diploma, and eight certificate courses.
