
GUWAHATI: Published in 1987, the book Matsyagandha is one of the most revered works of Dr Homen Borgohain. The book was successful in depicting the class divide and the vicious grip of kani or opium addiction in the Assamese society. The book has a pan India relevance. With Col. Jagadish Kakati's impeccable translation, the book, now known as, The Fisherman's Daughter, is a delight for readers who are not well-versed with the Assamese language but have been missing out on accomplished works from the region. Each paragraph is written and translated with emotion, understanding, and a deep wisdom about life.
The book was released on Monday by Wissen Monk Publications amid the presence of esteemed guests at the Assam Book Fair, Guwahati. Pradipta Borgohain, author, teacher, and winner of the Katha Award for Best Translation in Assamese in 1997; Hemanta Barman, veteran Assamese journalist, editor, writer, translator, recipient of the Harivanshrai Bachchan Journalism Award for promoting national integration, communal harmony and social causes in 2004 and the Sarojini Naidu Prize for best reporting on Women and Panchyati Raj in 2006; Usha Rani Mazumdar, former Vice Principal of Morigaon College and writer and Dr. Taranee Deka, Professor of Gauhati University and author are the noteworthy personalities who graced the book release event, stated a press release.
