Congress moves RGI on NRC update

GUWAHATI: The APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) has appealed to the RGI (Register General of India) to ensure that no genuine Indian citizen is left out of the NRC currently being updated under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India. In a statement issued to the press on Wednesday, APCC spokesperson Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya said: “After the publication of the complete draft NRC, it has come to light that the NRC update process has slowed down. Apart from this, many genuine Indians are being harassed. Even people who/whose forefathers have their names in the 1951 NRC are being harassed for no rhyme or reason as some people, without submitting any valid supporting documents, raised objections against the inclusion of their names. We’ve evidences of such unnecessary harassment to genuine Indians. Even a section of indigenous people of the State feels insulted because of such harassments being meted out to them. Many of such objectors are not turning up to the hearing centres as and when they called.

Even Hindu Bengalis, who were promised by the government of according them Indian Citizenship, are being harassed in the name of NRC update. Such harassments have led many of them to commit suicide. Five of the people, who had committed suicide in detention camps in the State, were Hindu Bengalis. Our question is: Can the NRC being updated now make all genuine Indians feel assured of forever?”
