Evicted families in Guwahati demand rehabilitation

GUWAHATI: Residents of the Silsako area of the city have opposed the district administration's reported decision to conduct a second eviction drive in the locality.

The local residents said on Wednesday that there are some big buildings in the area, such as the Hotel Ginger and the Ajmal Foundation establishment. They questioned as to why these have been spared and only humble indigenous families have been targeted for eviction by the district administration.

As many as 27 indigenous families were evicted from Silsako on May 13.

The evicted families are now staying in the area in makeshift sheds constructed of bamboo and tarpaulin sheets. They have submitted a memorandum to the Circle Officer, stating that they will not budge from the area until the Government provides them with land for resettlement.

It may be mentioned that the All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) has expressed concern over the eviction in the Silsako area. The ATTS said that it is deeply concerned over the fact that 27 indigenous tribal families were evicted without prior notice at Silsako, despite the State Government's earlier assurance that no tribal family would be evicted from their settlements.
