Eviction Drive Carried Out at BK Kakoty Road, Guwahati

GUWAHATI: An eviction drive was done on Wednesday in BK Kakoty Road, Guwahati, Assam, where around 50 street vendors and hawkers were evicted. An official release stated that the drive was carried out by a team of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) authorities drove by Aditya Gogoi, the ACS of Municipal Secretary & i/c Collector (Enforcement Branch) under the leadership of Debashish Sharma, ACS, Commissioner, GMC, alongside 40 Municipal Corporation Police (MCP) personnel, as the illegal encroachment was done by the street vendors.

It has been informed that the street vendors and hawkers were illegally infringing the streets, footpaths, and pavements.

Yesterday (Wednesday), mic declarations were made cautioning them of the eviction drive, but there was no impact, and thus, the drive was conducted, according to the release.

Last week, a team of Enforcement Branch, GMC, carried out an eviction drive against illegal street vendors in footpaths and pavements of the Uzanbazar area of Guwahati. The Eviction drive was carried out by Gogoi. Several complaints were registered in GMC against the vendors operating in the Uzanbazar area for a long time as this eviction drive was carried out to free the footpaths and payments of the Uzanbazar area from rampant encroachment by vendors and shopkeepers.

Additionally, earlier, the Veterinary Branch and Enforcement Branch of GMC alongside the Assam Police led a joint inspection at various poultry and meat shops across Guwahati against the unhygienic sale of meat. The inspection drive was done at Ganeshguri Bazar, Hatigaon Road, Bhetapara Ghoramara, Beharbari, Nalapara, Lakhra Bazar, Saukuchi, Lalganesh, Colony Bazar, Kalapahar, B.K. Kakati Road, and Ulubari. The GMC expressed that animals should be experimentally butchered at slaughterhouses to guarantee the safe supply of healthy meat to the buyers. Animals butchered informally release toxins that are very unsafe for consumption and can prompt serious medical issues.
