GUWAHATI: The inaugural First Global Assamese Conference is all set to be held from January 16 to January 18, 2026, at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. This landmark event will bring together members of the global Assamese diaspora to discuss and collaborate on Assam’s development while celebrating its rich cultural and historical heritage.

Organized under the banner of the Global Assamese Engagement Initiative, the three-day convention seeks to mobilize the knowledge, passion, and expertize of Assamese individuals living abroad to contribute to the state’s progress. The initiative focuses on fostering connections between the diaspora and local stakeholders, with an emphasis on Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) goals aimed at grassroots-level development.

The conference will be thematically structured into three days—each addressing a core area of interest. Day 1, titled The Historical Tapestry of Assam, will delve into the state’s ancient civilisations, medieval history, colonial legacy, and cultural evolution. Sessions will include a keynote on the Kamarupa kingdom, discussions on the Ahom Dynasty, and interactive panels on colonial-era transformations. The day will conclude with the drafting of a heritage preservation roadmap.

Day 2 will focus on Sustainable Development Strategy in Assam, will bring together policymakers, experts, and sectoral leaders to formulate actionable plans aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Highlights include sessions on climate action, disaster resilience, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and inclusive economic growth. Afternoon sessions will explore collaborative models and conclude with a shared sustainability roadmap and stakeholder commitments.

Day 3 will be dedicated to Engaging the Global Assamese Diaspora, will spotlight the role of non-resident Assamese in shaping the future of the state. The day will feature a keynote by a leading diaspora figure, panel discussions on priority sectors such as education, healthcare, and technology, and workshops on diaspora-led initiatives like telemedicine, scholarships, startups, and knowledge transfer. Success stories of impactful diaspora projects will be presented, followed by strategic planning for future engagement.

A special highlight of the event will be the launch of the first-ever Global NRA Expert Database, allowing Assamese professionals from around the world to contribute their expertize to development initiatives in Assam. Early bird registration is currently open, and attendees will have the opportunity to network with leaders from Assam’s education, healthcare, trade, and tourism sectors.

The conference will also present the prestigious ‘Community Recognition Award’, honouring outstanding contributions by diaspora members. Nominations for the award are now open via the official website.
