Folk artiste Dhoroni Banikya conferred Swabhav Shilpi Amulya Kakati Memorial Award

GUWAHATI: Folk artiste Dhoroni Banikya from Bongaigaon district was conferred with the 'Swabhav Shilpi Amulya Kakati Memorial Award 2021' for his contribution to the cultural heritage of the State.

The award was presented by the Students-Artistes-Writers Welfare Trust of the All Guwahati Students' (AGSU) Union on Tuesday, at the Vivekananda Kendra auditorium in Guwahati. Banikya was felicitated by actress Moloya Goswami and the award carries Rs 25,000, a pator cheleng sador, and a memento.

Addressing the programme, AASU (All Assam Students' Union) adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya highlighted that the Trust has been providing financial assistance to the students from economically poorer section since many years.

Bhattacharya stressed that folk art should be given importance in Government's cultural exchange programmes between different colleges. He exhorted to schools and colleges to hold competitions related to folk art.

"People should be honoured while they are alive not after their death so that the younger generation can be inspired by their works," Bhattacharya added.

Singer JP Das, actor Hiranya Kashyap, wife of singer late Jayanta Hazarika, Monika Hazarika, actress Madhurima Choudhury, among others were present at the programme.
