Former Vice-chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University Annadacharan Bhagawati No More

GUWAHATI: Noted anthropologist, researcher and former vice-chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh, Annadacharan Bhagawati passed away at a hospital in Guwahati on Saturday evening. He was 82. He leaves behind his wife, a daughter and a son.

His mortal remains were consigned to flames at Bhootnath Crematorium in the presence of his admirers and relatives.

His body was first taken to Gauhati University where last respects were paid to him. From the university, the body was taken to Bhootnath Crematorium.

Hailing from Koithalkuchi in Nalbari district, he had to have his school and college education at various places because of repeated transfer of his father.

Graduated in Anthropology from Gauhati University, Bhagawati had his master’s from Calcutta University. He had his doctoral degree from Auckland University in New Zealand with Commonwealth stipend.

Apart from teaching in Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University, he also held the post of Director at Amio Kumar Das Social Change and Development Institute.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoled the death of the educationist. In a condolence message, Sonowal said, “During his lifetime, Annadacharan Bhagawati made a remarkable academic contribution to the Northeast through his books based on research on the ethnicity in the Northeast. His demise is an irreparable loss to the social life in Assam.”
