Foundation Day of City-Based Cancer Research Body Held In B Borooah Cancer Institute

GUWAHATI: Foundation Day Function of Cancer Research Foundation, India (CRFI) was held in the auditorium of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati on Thursday. CRFI is a city-based national organization, which promotes and supports cancer research. Prof (Dr) Dipika Deka, Vice Chancellor of Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences, Assam attended the program as its Chief Guest. Prof Deka spoke on various initiatives undertaken by the University to encourage faculties and post-graduate students to take up research. The Guest of Honor was Dr USN Murthy, Director of National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research in Guwahati.

Foundation Day Oration in memory of Late Binod Kumar Agarwal was delivered by Dr Rajiv Sarin on “Can some form of cancers be eliminated”. Dr Rajiv Sarin is Professor of Radiation Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. Dr Sarin is In-Charge of the Cancer Genetics Unit at Tata Memorial Center. Dr Sarin emphasized need for establishing a Molecular Genetics Screening Clinic at BBCI. As per a press release, Dr Amal Chandra Kataki, Chairman of Cancer Research Foundation, India said, in India, there are few organizations that work solely for promotion of cancer research, and in this regard, the contribution of CRFI will be recalled in the future. Since its inception, the organization has been able to carve a niche among cancer researchers across length and breadth of the country, further stated Dr Kataki.

On the same occasion, Dr Munlima Hazarika, Professor of Pediatric Oncology at BBCI was presented an Award of Appreciation for her exemplary services for betterment of childhood cancer patients in the North East India. R K Borkotoky Best Research Paper Award 2019 was presented to Dr P Venkatraman from Bharatiar University in Coimbatore, Tamilnadu for research on developing low-cost early breast and lung cancer detection device.
