Four Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) go to by-polls today

GUWAHATI: Four Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) are going to by-polls on October 21 from 7 am. The four LACs are Ratabari, Jania, Rangapara and Sonari.

The returning and polling officers have already reached their respective destinations this afternoon. The four LACs together have 830 polling stations – 202 in Ratabari, 229 in Jania, 197 in Rangapara and 202 in Sonari.

As many as 6,78,898 voters – 3,51,094 males, 3,27,803 females and one third gender – will seal the fate of 20 candidates in the four LACs. While Ratabari has 1,64,830 voters, including 78,493 females; Jania has 1,88,214 voters, including 89,495 females and one third gender; Rangapara has 1,55,267 voters, including 76,458 females; and Sonari has 1,70,587 voters, including 83,357 females.

As many as 20 candidates will vie for their luck in the four constituencies – four in Ratabari, nine in Jania, five in Rangapara and two in Sonari.

In Ratabari the BJP has fielded Bijay Malakar, the Congress has fielded Keshab Prasad Rajak, the SUCI has fielded Birendra Rabidas and Parikshit Rai, an independent.

The candidates in Jania are Tafiqur Rahman of the BJP, Shamshul Haq of the Congress, Rafiqul Islam of the AIUDF, Rustum Ali of the CPI-M, Chand Mahammed of the NCP, Rafiqul Islam of the Democratic Party of India, Farooq Khan of the AAP, Abdul Jalil Talukdar, an independent and Subhas Sutradhar, also an independent.

The five candidates of Rangapara are Rajen Barthakur of the BJP, Kartik Kurmi of the Congress, Royal Soren of the CPI-M, Sanjit Rajbongshi of the CPI and Arup Kumar Choudhury of the Bharatiya Gana Parishad.

Sonari has a straight fight between Nabanita Handique of the BJP and Suhsil Suri of the Congress.

The by-poll is necessitated because of Rangapara MLA Pallab Lochan Das, Jania MLA Abdul Khaleque, Sonari MLA Tapan Deka and Ratabari MLA Kripanath Mallah being elected to the Lok Sabha this year.
