Gauhati High Court Grants Absolute Interim Bail to YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani

GUWAHATI: In a significant development, the Gauhati High Court has granted absolute interim bail to popular YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani in connection with a case against him at the cyber police station of the Guwahati police regarding “vulgar and obscene” comments on his YouTube show “India’s Got Latent.”

During the hearing, Chanchlani’s counsel, J. Borah, submitted that the petitioner had cooperated with the investigation and appeared before the Investigating Officer as directed by the court.

The Gauhati High Court bench of Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita said, “Considering the fact that the petitioner has cooperated in the investigation, the interim anticipatory bail granted to the petitioner vide order dated February 18, 2025, is hereby made absolute with condition No. 2 attached to the said order remaining intact.”

Earlier, the court set the condition (condition No. 2) “the petitioner shall not directly or indirectly make any inducement, threat, or promise to the informant or to any other persons who may be acquainted with the facts of the case so as to dissuade such person from disclosing such facts before the Investigating Officer or to any Court.”

The case revolves around an FIR lodged by the crime branch in Guwahati, alleging that Chanchlani promoted vulgar and obscene comments on his YouTube show. The FIR accused Chanchlani under various sections, including promoting obscenity and insulting women’s modesty. Chanchlani had earlier been granted anticipatory bail by the Gauhati High Court on February 18, with the condition that he would appear before the investigating officer within 10 days.

Meanwhile, Chanchlani had complied with the court’s directive and appeared before the crime branch on February 27.
