GUWAHATI: Gauhati University has removed Kandarpa Sarma from his position as Exam Controller following intense protests by students over allegations of misconduct. The decision was made on Friday, a day after students staged a demonstration outside the Vice Chancellor's office, demanding his resignation.
The protests began on March 27, led by the Postgraduate Students' Union (PGSU) and the Law College Students' Union, in response to claims that Sarma had behaved inappropriately with students who sought his assistance regarding exam results.
Reports indicate that a group of students, including former PGSU General Secretary Nayanjyoti Gogoi, attempted to meet Sarma for an official discussion. However, they were met with hostility as the exam controller allegedly insulted them, referring to Gogoi as a "broker" and "sycophant" before forcibly ejecting him from his office.
Students allege that this is just a part of the overall trend of ill-treatment, with various complaints having been filed against the ill-treatment of students and researchers by Kandarpa Sarma. Fed up of these continuous issues, students organized protests, shouting slogans and holding demonstrations in front of the Vice Chancellor's office.
In the protest, Vice Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta even tried to sit down with students to listen to their grievances. But tensions rose, triggering his anger when students started to heckle him. The situation reflects the growing unrest within the university community regarding accountability and student rights.
