GUWAHATI: Gauhati University hosted a two-day international symposium titled "The Roots of India-Nepal Relations: A Perspective on Guru Machhindranath" from 10th to 11th February 2025. The event is held at Gauhati University. It brought together eminent scholars and experts from India and Nepal to delve into the historical and cultural ties between the two nations through the life and contributions of Guru Machhindranath. The symposium explored the legacy of Guru Machhindranath, also known as Matsyendranatha, Macchindranath, Minanatha, and Minapa. Revered in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, he is believed to have hailed from Kamrup (present-day Assam) and played a significant role in Nepalese history.
According to legend, his arrival in drought-stricken Nepal brought much-needed rainfall, fostering a profound connection between the two countries. The event provided a platform for rich discussions on the shared cultural and religious heritage of the two nations. The symposium successfully highlighted the enduring ties between India and Nepal, emphasizing the need to preserve and promote this cultural bond through academic and cultural initiatives.
