Get violence probed by Gauhati High Court Judge: AALA

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Lawyers’ Association (AALA) has appealed to the State Government to institute an inquiry into the violence in the agitation against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) with a sitting judge of the Gauhati High Court.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, AALA general secretary Dipak Kumar Das said, “We’ve filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court of India against the CAA. Our prayers to the apex court are scrapping of the Act and its interim stay till it is scrapped. Fortunately, on both the prayers the apex court issued a notice to the Government of India to show as to why the Act should not be scrapped and stayed its implementation till it is scrapped.” Das said, “The entire world says that the CAA is a discriminatory piece of legislation. However, the BJP says that this law is set to save India. We’re going to stage our Raj Bhawan Chalo agitation tomorrow. Through the Governor we’ll send memorandums to the President of India making it clear that the Bill which he gave his ascent to is an anti-constitutional one that is set to dilute the age-old Assamese culture.”

On Friday the Lawyers’ Association, Guwahati (LAG); the Gauhati High Court Bar Association; Guahati High Court Lawyers’ Association and the Amingaon Lawyers’ Association will take part in the Raj Bhawan Challo agitation in Guwahati. In other districts and sub-divisions in the State its 46 bar associations will also send memoranda to the President of India through their respective DCs and SDOs.
