GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has taken action against illegal roadside storage of construction materials. On Thursday, a resident of Surya Path was fined Rs 2,500 for violating municipal regulations by stacking building materials on the road. The penalty comes as part of GMC’s intensified drive to enforce civic norms and ensure unobstructed movement for pedestrians and vehicles. Officials have reiterated that public spaces are not to be used for storing construction items, which not only hinder mobility but also contribute to dust pollution and safety hazards.

“If we see building materials stacked on roads, we will take action,” a GMC official said, issuing a warning that more stringent measures may follow if violations continue.

The civic body has urged residents and contractors to adhere strictly to guidelines and utilize private or designated areas for storing materials during construction or renovation work. The move has been welcomed by many local citizens, who have long raised concerns about encroachments and construction debris spilling over onto footpaths and streets across the city. GMC officials confirmed that regular inspections will continue in the coming weeks to curb such violations.
