Governor calls for peace and restraint

GUWAHATI: Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi appealed to all sections of the people of Assam to maintain peace and order in the aftermath of the approval of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 by the Parliament.

Prof. Mukhi, in a statement here on Thursday, urged all agitated sections of the people of the State to maintain restraint as they have been showing high degree of patience and political maturity during every uncanny situation. He also said that if the student community has any issues against the Government they have every right to agitate but through peaceful manner. They should not take law in their hands and express themselves democratically.

He, at the same time maintained that in view of approval of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 by the Parliament, Government of India showing its commitment as it has always been, is taking remedial steps, including implementation of the Clause VI of the Assam Accord to safeguard the culture, ethos, language along with other rights of the indigenous people of Assam.

The Governor further said that in the interest and development of Assam no citizen should damage public property, a press release said.
