GST has proven to be a curse, says Debabrata Saikia

GUWAHATI: Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia slammed the Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's statements that the GST (Goods and Services Tax) will be a blessing for the State.

Saikia asserted in reality the GST has proven to be a curse. He underlined that the Central Government has informed the State governments that it will not be able to provide their respective GST shares due to the threatening economic crisis in the country.

"At the time of implementing the GST, the Congress party had provided reasons to the parliament as to why the Act should not be introduced in an unplanned manner. However, the Congress' statements were neglected at the time. Currently, the corona situation has proved that the GST has become problematic for the State," he said.

Further, Saikia pointed out that the country's economy was already going through a bad phase prior to the pandemic, as the RBI had stated. But a false narrative is being provided to the people that the corona pandemic has created an economic crisis in the country.

Rather than helping the State government with assistance, the Centre is running away from its responsibilities, the leader asserted.
