Guwahati: Bina Bhattacharjya, mother of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Chief Advisor Dr. Samujjal Bhattacharjya, passed away late Monday night at the age of 95. She had been suffering from age-related ailments and breathed her last at 11:15 pm at her residence in Kahilipara, Guwahati.
Her mortal remains had been taken to the family’s ancestral residence at South Sarania on Tuesday morning and performed last rites at the Navagraha crematorium.
Condolences have poured in from across the state. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to express his grief, writing, “I am deeply saddened by the death of the most adorable mother Veena Bhattacharya, Chief Advisor of All Assam Students’ Union, Dr. Samujhal Kumar Bhattacharya. The demise of a mother who was always aware of the flow of the social life of Assam is an irreparable loss to national life. Very kind and loving, I pray for the eternal peace of her soul and extend my deepest condolences to Dr. Bhattacharjya and his family during this sad time.”
BJP leader Ashok Singhal visited the family’s residence to pay his last respects. In a post, he wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Bina Bhattacharyya, beloved mother of Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya. May Ishwar grant Sadgati to her soul.”
