GUWAHATI: The U-turn on the National Highway near the BJP office in Lalmati, Guwahati, has been permanently closed following a spate of fatal accidents that raised serious road safety concerns. The decision comes in the wake of a recent tragic collision involving a dumper truck and three other vehicles, which claimed two lives.
Authorities moved swiftly after the latest incident, conducting an urgent joint inspection involving the city police, traffic police, transport department, and a crash investigation team. Upon assessing the site, officials concluded that the U-turn posed a significant threat to commuter safety, prompting its permanent closure.
“We had to prioritize saving lives,” said an official involved in the inspection. “The pattern of accidents clarified it that immediate action was needed.”
The closure has drawn mixed reactions from the public. While many residents and daily commuters have supported the move as a much-needed measure to prevent further tragedies, some have voiced concerns over the inconvenience caused by the lack of an alternative turning point nearby.
With the U-turn now closed, commuters are urging the authorities to provide a safe and accessible alternative route to ease traffic and minimise disruption.
The transport and traffic departments have not yet announced any alternative arrangements, but officials indicated that plans are underway to explore viable options to reduce inconvenience for regular commuters.
