GUWAHATI: The largest airport of the Northeastern part of the country has decided to increase the number of destinations to which it has direct flights in the summer months. The summer schedule starts from the last Sunday of March and continues till the last Sunday of October.

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport here has planned to operate more additional flights weekly for the summer schedule of the airport. The authorities aim to increase the number of daily flights from 63 to 72 during this period of time.

The new destinations likely to be added to the list of flights include Bhubaneswar in Odisha, Goa MOPA, Dehradun in Uttarakhand, Jodhpur in Rajasthan, and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Apart from these direct routes, several routes will find additional flights via Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Lucknow and Kolkata.

In addition to the above-mentioned flights, the Bhutan Airline is expected to operate from 13 May onwards with its new direct flights on two days of the week, connecting Guwahati in India and Paro in Bhutan.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire region has seen an increase in the footfall of tourists from different parts of the country and Guwahati Airport is no exception. Three popular airlines operating out of the Guwahati airport have already predicted an increase in the number of tourists coming to the airport in the summer season.

The airport had earlier reported a total number of passengers in the month of February 2023, which was 20% higher compared to the same in February 2022. The airport has also seen a 24% increase in air traffic movement in the same duration of time.

Nearly 190000 out of the approximately 400000 passengers used the departure facility, while the rest of them arrived in the city. The top three destinations connecting Guwahati airport are Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru and it is also connected to the two international destinations of Singapore and Paro. The airport also witnessed about 1800 flights from various destinations in the month of February 2023 which is a massive increase compared to the number in the same month one year ago.
