Guwahati: The Assam Rail Passengers’ Association (ARPA) has once again appealed to the Assam Legislative Assembly to address the issue of missing minimum railway services in the state. ARPA acknowledged the NDA government’s efforts in allocating substantial funds for railway infrastructure development but expressed concerns over the cancellation of several essential railway services in Assam.
“Unfortunately, the authority of the railway has cancelled many essential services in our state, forcing the masses to move towards road transport,” said Dipankar Sharma, general secretary of ARPA.
The association highlighted that the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) had sent over 100 proposals to the Railway Board in New Delhi for final approval, which are still pending consideration by the Railway Ministry. The delay has reportedly led to public agitation, including protests like “Rail Roko.”
“As a result, people are resorting to agitation steps like rail roko. For inter-district travel, even short-distance services are given boarding issues,” Sharma added. ARPA has urged the Assam Legislative Assembly to pass a resolution to expedite the redressal of grievances and facilitate the approval of pending NFR proposals.
