GUWAHATI: Panic spread across the Bamunimaidam Railway Colony late Wednesday night after a group of miscreants suspected to attempt to set ablaze shops in the local market. While some of them managed to escape, one was caught red-handed by alert residents and handed over to the police. According to police sources, the group was preparing to ignite one of the shops when local traders spotted suspicious activity and immediately intervened. In the commotion that followed, one of the miscreants was overpowered by the crowd, while the rest fled the scene.
The detained individual was later identified as Safikul Ali, a resident of Mangaldoi.
However, tensions escalated during Ali’s arrest when a scuffle broke out between the police and locals, leading to a home guard sustaining injuries. Following the incident, Chandmari Police launched an investigation into the alleged assault on police personnel. One individual was arrested on Thursday in connection with the clash.
Meanwhile, police sources confirmed that another fire broke out and damaged many shops in the same area a few days ago. Further investigation is underway.
