GUWAHATI: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday chaired a briefing session at Raj Bhavan to focus on strengthening the dairy sector in Assam through the active engagement of the Cooperation Department, the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, and the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd. (WAMUL).
During the session, the governor underscored the vast potential of the cooperative movement in addressing rural unemployment and enhancing self-reliance. “Cooperatives have the transformative power to uplift rural communities by creating employment opportunities, especially when youth are trained and empowered through cooperative models,” he said.
Referring to the Government of India’s strategic thrust on cooperative development, the governor highlighted the establishment of the Ministry of Cooperation on July 6, 2021, as a visionary step toward realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mission of “Prosperity through Cooperation.” He also referred to the dynamic leadership of Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, whose policy interventions have revitalized the sector across the country.
The Governor emphasized the vital role of youth in making the cooperative movement sustainable and forward-looking. “Youth-centric programmes, curriculum integration in schools and colleges, and dynamic policies are essential to make cooperatives aspirational among the next generation,” he stated.
Governor Acharya also highlighted the significant role of cooperatives in the White Revolution, contributing to India’s self-sufficiency in milk production. He urged Assam’s cooperatives to take proactive steps to become leaders in dairy production in the Northeast and beyond.
The meeting featured detailed PowerPoint presentations by senior officials from the concerned departments, showcasing current initiatives, opportunities for sectoral growth, and roadmaps for enhanced coordination, stated a press release.
