GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) staged a sit-in on Monday at the high court premises against the proposed shifting of the high court to Rangmahal in North Guwahati. The bar association also protested against the resolution of the full court regarding the proposed shifting.

In the demonstration senior advocate Arup Barbora said, “If needed, the government should shift the secretariat to Rangmahal, as Gauhati High Court has its own heritage; it’s like a temple.”

Senior advocate and president of Gauhati High Court Bar Association, Kamal Narayan Choudhary, said, “Advocates are one of the greatest stakeholders, but the government did not give priority.”

Earlier, in the general body meeting on March 19, 2025, the Association decided not to take part in the proposed committee to be set up on the shifting of the High Court to Rangmahal in North Guwahati.

The decision to form the committee was suggested at a meeting on March 13 between the Chief Justice, other judges and representatives of the bar association.

The general body of the bar association reiterated its opposition to the proposed shifting of the Gauhati High Court and decided against its members being part of any committee to be formed for overseeing the establishment of judicial infrastructure at Rangmahal.

The general body of the bar association decided to seek a copy of the resolution of the full court regarding the proposed shifting and to demand a clarification on the circumstances under which such a decision was taken without consulting the bar. The general body condemned the reported meeting of the Chief Justice and his companion, Justice Suman Shyam, with the Chief Minister on the grounds of not maintaining transparency.
