Guwahati: In a significant move to preserve and promote Assam’s rich historical legacy, a photo gallery dedicated to Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was formally inaugurated on Tuesday at the Assam State Archives in Ganeshguri, Guwahati. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and General Administration Department Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass visited the archives on the occasion and expressed appreciation for the department’s efforts.
Speaking after the visit, Minister Dass remarked that the Assam State Archives is not just a vital repository for Assam, but also one of the most significant archival institutions in the entire Northeast. He highlighted that researchers, historians, and scholars from across the globe regularly access the archive’s extensive resources.
The archives houses an extraordinary collection of historical documents, including approximately 5 lakh files and records dating back to 1774, 35,000 manuscripts and reports, 8,000 gazettes from 1874 onwards, and over 5,000 old maps. Notable records include documents related to the Patharughat peasant uprising, the Assam Movement, and even accounts of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar’s visit to the state.
Dass extended his heartfelt thanks to Director Binita Pegu, Joint Director Mukul Das, and all officials and staff members for their dedication in preserving the archive’s priceless contents. He also commended the team for taking progressive steps to modernize and enhance public engagement with the archival resources. The inauguration of the Bhupen Hazarika gallery is expected to draw more visitors and scholars, further cementing the Archives’ role in safeguarding Assam’s cultural and historical heritage.
