GUWAHATI: The youth wing of the BJP held a protest in Guwahati's Hengerabari demanding the arrest of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi in connection with the National Herald case. The protest is an indication of the BJP's continued attempts to tackle issues related to the financial misdealings associated with the National Herald newspaper.

Earlier yesterday, thousands of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) workers protested on April 16 in Guwahati, gheraoing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office.

The demonstration was part of a nationwide agitation by the Indian National Congress against the central government's alleged misuse of central agencies for political vendetta, particularly following the attachment of National Herald assets and charges against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.

The National Herald case has been the center of political debate in India, with the BJP blaming the Congress party for indulging in corrupt activities. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi regarding alleged money laundering in the National Herald case. Submitted to a special court on April 9, the next hearing is set for April 25.

The investigation began in May 2019 when the ED attached a Panchkula land plot re-allotted to Associated Journals Limited (AJL) by the then Congress government. The ED alleges that 99% of AJL’s shares were sold to 'Young Indians' for just Rs 50 lakh, despite the properties being valued over Rs 2,000 crore.

Sonia and Rahul each hold 38% in Young Indian, while the late Congress leaders Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes hold the remaining 24%. Both Gandhis were questioned by the ED in 2022.
