Guwahati: Over 20 days into their protest, Jyoti Kendra teachers in Assam have transformed their demonstration site in Chachal into a makeshift classroom after children they once taught began showing up for lessons. Under the banner of the Jyoti Kendra Shiksha Karmi Santha, the teachers have been staging demonstrations since July 23, demanding higher remuneration, permanent appointments.

Many of these shiksha karmis’ have served for years in temporary roles, receiving minimal pay and no job security. The children, most from disadvantaged backgrounds — including street children and those working in garages, hotels, or as beggars — had been missing classes since the end of summer vacation 11 days ago. Parents, eager to keep their children learning, have been bringing them to the protest site, where teachers now hold lessons before escorting them safely home.
