GUWAHATI: Another brazen incident of chain snatching by brandishing weapons was reported from the Rajgarh area of the city today.

A housewife of the Rajgarh locality, while returning home after shopping, was waylaid by a bike- borne miscreant on Rajgarh's Bye- lane No 11 at around 8.30 in the morning.

The biker tried to snatch her chain and held her by the throat but the brave lady tried to resist and managed to land a few punches to the body of the assailant. Then things took a turn for the worse when the chain- snatcher held a weapon to her neck. The lady was unsure whether it was a pistol but said, "It seemed like that".

She got scared and the miscreant took the opportunity to snatch her chain and tried to ride off when the courageous lady again caught hold of his jacket but the biker managed to make good his escape.

A bystander witnessed the incident and took down the registration of the bike- AS 01 EM 8851- but it turned out to be a false plate when the police checked the records. It turns out that false number plates are being used to commit such crimes, leaving the police with no clues.

Locals complained that police patrolling was rarely carried out in the area and thieves and robbers are having a field day.

A senior citizen of the area said, "The police are sleeping. There is no law and order in the city. Every day, we hear reports of such chain snatching and robbery. It is high time the city police woke up to the menace."

Such incidents have seen a sharp upward trend in recent times. A few weeks back, chain snatchers struck in the heart of the city at Guwahati Club. A lady out on her morning walk was waylaid by a couple of miscreants on a bike. They brandished a sharp weapon, like a machete, and snatched her chain after threatening her.
